Mid-September in the Garden

The flower gardens continue to flourish, but the gardening chores of deadheading, removing old stems, and removing self-seeded plants is a daily job.     At this time of year we have some new appearances from late-blooming varieties, some of which are featured here.

In the vegetable garden many of the main crops are being harvested and this will continue up to the first hard frost.   All of the fruit from trees has now been picked and we are freezing and dehydrating some for winter use.   

We are busy transplanting perennials and small shrubs to adjust the location to make the mature heights symmetrical and graduated.   A number of self-seeded mature plants are being removed for later planting on the slopes at the back.   

At the same time, an ongoing project is to embed boulders in a steep sandy slope below and with smaller boulders to line some of the walkways.   Boulders are collected in the bush on backroads, always looking for the right shape and texture.
