Mayne Island Japanese Gardens

A Gardener's Journal Posted on January 3, 2026 by D. SmithDecember 3, 2025

We stayed on Mayne Island in early fall to hike, paddle, and explore.    On one of these days, we raveled across the island to Dinner Bay and visited the Mayne Island Japanese Gardens.   The gardens were built to commemorate the Japanese settlers on the island from 1900 to 1942.   The start of the garden was in about 1987, but wasn’t fully open for public use until 2002.    The gardens were mostly built and maintained by volunteers (more information).

The park garden has a large pond, an island, several bridges, and several specialized garden beds with irises, fuchsias, rhododendrons, Japanese maples, cherry trees, and aquatic plants.

We walked the paths, took some photos and stopped to enjoy the peaceful gardens.   A photo gallery of some of the plants and sights can be seen at this link, but is also included here as an embedded slideshow.

We have hiked a number of the Gulf Islands in spring and fall and we have enjoyed the gardens and the native plans we encounter on our visits.
