Himalayan Fleeceflower

A Gardener's Journal Posted on June 2, 2026 by D. SmithMay 29, 2026

Himalayan Fleeceflower (Bistorta affinis) is a perennial groundcover used in home gardens.    It was found at mid elevations in the Himalayas area and west toward Afghanistan.  It spreads with horizontal stems, filling in quickly.    It is suited to the front of a border or for rock gardens.    Leaves green up in spring and by late spring, stems grow with spikes of tiny white-pink flowers.   Late in summer, the bracts turn red and last up to an including snowfall.

Himalayan is very adaptable to soil conditions, prefers a sunny location, and it will need to be watered in dry periods. It can be deadheaded in summer to promote more flower stems and it should be pruned back in spring, but otherwise it is easy to care for and a valued part of the flower gardens.
