Mid-June in the Flower Gardens
By mid-June all the flower beds are full of blooming varieties of perennials, annuals, and shrubs. A number of summer-flowering plants are growing, but not yet flowering. Some of the spring-flowering perennials and bulbs have been setting seed and starting to wither in the warmer weather. The major tasks of landscaping are now complete, but a number of small projects are underway. Daily maintenance of weeding, deadheading, transplanting, and cleaning up is part of our routine. Since we are often out hiking, paddling, playing tennis, or going to fitness activities in the mornings, the afternoon is our main time for gardening. If it is hot, we look for shaded spots to work in.
We take the time to walk through the garden each day, sometimes with a camera ready. Many photos are taken, but only a few make it into our albums. At the end of the season, we prune out the ones we don’t want to keep, and we move the older photos into folder sorted by species and add notes to each photos metadata.
There are many stars in the garden at this time, but at this time, our elderberry, mock orange, Clematis, and nine bark are our best shrubs. There are many perennial stars, but the blue-eyed grass, spiderwort, columbine, Maltese cross, painted daisies, and Dianthus catch our eye each time.
Shared here are photos taken in the second week of June from spots in several flower beds in the garden: painted daisy (Tanacetum coccineum), bearded Iris (Iris germanica), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), climbing Rose (Rosa sp.), Delphinium, columbine (Aquilegia sp.), creeping thyme (Thymus serpyllum), blanket flower (Gaillardia sp.), cranesbill (Geranium sp.), sweet William (Dianthus barbatus), violet (Viola sp.), foxglove (Digitalus purpurea), stonecrop (Sedum sp.), goat’s-beard (Aruncus sp.), elder (Sambucus sp.), soapwort (Saponaria officinalis), Clematis and Penstemon.
