Chamomile
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is an annual herb in the Asteracaea family. It readily grows from seed and usually reseeds in abundance. These low-growing plants can be attractive in masses when flowering but look more weedy later in the season. Chamomile is easy to grow as long as the spot is sunny and not too dry.
Although they may appear invasive, they are easy to hoe down if they appear in unneeded spots. We usually have some each year, keeping a small, dense patch which we harvest in summer, drying the steams and flower heads outdoors, then storing a batch for a herbal tea. There are many claims of health benefits, but little scientific evidence for the claims. It is, nevertheless an aromatic and pleasant tea.
The perennial species of chamomile is sometimes called Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). It is a low-growing plant, hardy to Zone 4. It can be used as a ground cover in protected spots.
A Google Photos album of annual chamomile is provided here as a slideshow or as an album at this link – Chamomile.
