End of November Flowers
In the last few days of November, the temperatures ranged from -3ºC to +2ºC. No hard frosts had yet decimated standing plants, but that is not far away. In the vegetable garden chard and arugula was still fine. Many herbs could still be harvested too. All of the cold-sensitive plants were gone for the season, but a few hardier plants were still green and a few were still flowering – Gaillardia, Calendula, snapdragons, fall asters, Penstemon, spike speedwell, Phlox, and Penstemon.
Some photos of these last “holdouts” are included in a Google Photos album – End of November Flowers.
Captions are provided in the album and an embedded slideshow of these late-blooming flowers is also provided here:
Will there still be any flowering plants in early December? I can see an upcoming overnight low of -8ºC, so probably not.
